The High Emprise of Padang, Indonesia
Harau
Valley
Last Saturday, February 2, 2019,
together with the SEA Teacher and SEA TVET Participants we went to the
Enchanted Kingdom of West Sumatra also known as the Harau Valley. We used the
university bus going there around 7:30 in the morning because the place is too
far from Padang. Regardless, that all the participants are late because we
ended up our cultural night late in the evening.
There’s a lot of activities in the
Harau Valley. You can witness also the great wall of west Sumatra. You can
enjoy the different activities such as: boating, zipline, magic carpet, firing
and many more. It’s more fun in Harau Valley.
Air
Terjun Lembah Anai
Air Terjun or Water Falls. Along the
way going to ButtiKinggi you will encounter this amazing falls. You will going
to stop your car and drop for a moment and take a couple of minutes to take a
picture with the freezing drop of water.
Jam Gadang
The Jam Gadang - the center of
Buttikinggi City. At this moment, the said Jam Gadang is under renovation. No
one is allowed to go inside and take a photo on it. But, luckily, we asked
permission to the care taker to go inside and take a couple of minutes by
taking a lot of pictures and selfies. That’s why I already had a photo
remembrance with Jam Gadang. I can assure that Jam Gadang can attract tourist
going there just because of the beauty itself.
Chinese
New Year
February 5, 2019, Chinese community
celebrated an annual Chinese new year in Padang Indonesia. Luckily, I witnessed
the said celebration together with our buddies and some of the SEA Teacher
Participants because some of our colleagues already got back in the
Philippines. We stayed there for almost five hours just to witness the said
celebration.
January 19, 2019, our trip was
cancelled last night because there’s no available bus to accompany us going
somewhere. That’s why Miss Nola invited us together with all the SEA Teacher
participants and some of the international students that studied in the
Universitas Negeri Padang for almost a year to their house to have something to
eat. Her family welcomed us and offer some foods that really delicious. We
played. We laughed. We created a memories.
Museum
January 13, 2019, it’s a Sunday. A
mass day for the Catholic. We, the boys SEA Teachers together with Mica from
Cebu, Philippines, we decided to dropped by first in the Museum then after that
we went to the nearby catholic church.
The museum was really nice, it is full
of history about Padang. There’s also a part of the museum they called
“Earthquake Library” because inside of that room was full of meaning and
memorable part during the big earthquake in Padang. I encourage everyone to go
there, and learn the history of Padang.
Tea Plantation
January 12, 2019, all the SEA Teacher Participants are excited to our first day field trip going to Tea Plantation and twin lake. Around 8:00 in the morning, the university bus fetch us outside the rektorat building. And we were not informed that some of the international students of UNP are going also to the said trip. They came late, that's why we arrived in our destination late.
Tea Plantation was so amazing. I am a coffee lover and not addicted to Tea. But, that time the smell of the Tea Plants was having an addicted smell and I Love it. We were blessed because we witnessed how to harvest and talked to the native people their about the life, community, and business about the Tea Plantation.

In May 1958, the city of Padang become the capital of the
Province of West Sumatra, whereas previously, the capital of the Province of
Central Sumatra was the city of Bukit Tinggi. In connection with that, the
population of the city of Padang is constantly increasing and increasing from
year to year, while the city of Padang during that time only had one Public
High School located on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman (in the current SMA 1 building).
The Ministry of Education and Culture, the West Sumatra
Regional Government, and the Regional Government of the Municipality of Padang
and the community, are very aware to the needs of adding one more Senior High
School in the city of Padang. Then with full wisdom, on August 1, 1961, the
Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, has established
"State High School, part A, B, C no. 2 Padang ", which is the 192nd
Public High School in Indonesia. The policies taken by the Ministry of
Education and Culture that time were as follows: State High School A, B, C
Padang, which at that time resided in Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, was divided into
two State High Schools A, B, C, namely:
SMA Negeri A, B, C no. 1 Padang
SMA Negeri A, B, C no. 2 Padang
The SMA A, B, C is still using the old A, B, C SMA high
school building in turns, namely:
In the morning, used by State High School A, B, C no. 1,
Afternoon, used by State High School A, B, C no 2. Public High School no. 2,
when it was founded in 1961, had 9 classes namely, classes IA, IB, IC, IIA,
IIB, IIC, and IIIA, IIIB, IIIC. IA, IB, IC, IIA, IIB, IIC, and IIIA, IIIB,
IIIC. Simultaneously, at that time the Leader / Head of the two new Senior High
Schools was determined, namely as follows:
SMA Negeri A, B, C no. 1 led by brother Arief Kamil
(deceased)
SMA Negeri A, B, C no. 2 led by Djohari Kahar
The history information about SMA Negeri 2 Padang was
taken in the article being published by the former Head of State High School
no. 2 Padang (1961-1964), H. Djohari Kahar Dt. Bagindo, SH, MSi.
2.
Academic
Support System
We are aware
that in senior high school there’s a lot of strands to pick. In SMA Negeri 2
Padang, they’ve HUMS and Science strands. That’s why they are using a lot of
laboratories related in science activities such as: Chemistry Laboratory,
Physics Laboratory, and Biological Laboratory. They also have Computer
Laboratory where the students are taking their exams during the duration of the
examination week. Library can also be found and usable for the needs of the
students. Books are new and the staff was very approachable. School hall where
seminars and meetings can be held is located outside of the headmaster’s office
at the second floor of the main building.
In
connection to my field which is Physical Education, they don’t have Auditorium
or Gymnasium where Physical Activities or any programs can be held but at the
back portion of the school they’ve a very big soccer field where students can
play and where physical activities conducted.
3.
Teaching
System
In senior
high school program, physical education subject has only one unit. It means,
that the teacher and the students meet once a week. That’s why in my one month
practice teaching experience in SMA Negeri 2 Padang I met a lot of students,
different students everyday. The teaching and learning processes inside the
school premises are started around 6:40 in the morning and it will end at
exactly 4:00 in the afternoon. I am truly impressed because the students their
came early as possible. As a student I know the epitome of waking up early in
the morning, taking a bath in the cold freezing water and having a public
transportation as a one way going to school.
The teaching
system was also connected to their religion, that’s why class schedules were
already fixed to their praying time. In Indonesia they’ve five prayers everyday
such as:
1. Subuh at
5:00 in the morning
2. Zuhur at
12:30 in the afternoon
3. Ashar at
3:50 in the afternoon
4. Maghrib at
6:30 in the evening
6. They also
have an exclusive prayer just for men in every Friday, around 12:30 in the
afternoon.
4.
Materials
and other learning resources
In relation
to my chosen field which is Music and Dance, books are rarely being used by the
students but the teachers must have a book as a reference and as a guide for
teaching. My cooperating teacher already had the syllabus and lesson plan for
the whole academic year. Equipment and facilities are the most important
materials in my field. Each room had already a fixed projector where teachers
can project their lessons in the white screen. But the question is, are the
teachers literate enough to cope the needs of the millennial students? In my
case, my cooperating teacher has her own laptop and she knows how to manage
technology inside the classroom. During our music class, each class had their
own little organ as a mock-up for the real one. They can also borrow a classic
guitar if they want. And it is really needed for the teachers to have something
in real during the discussion. During our dance class, as I said earlier the school
don’t have the facilities such as Dance Studio, Gymnasium or any other
facilities where Physical Activities conducted. In relation to that, my
cooperating teacher use one area where no one was passing by just to conduct
the dance class.
5.
Measurement and Evaluation System
Before i conducted my discussion to my class, I asked my cooperating teacher about the topic that i will going to deliver. And i am so glad about the topic "Music of Classical Period" because i knew this! In the Philippines, it was being thought in Grade 9.

During
the day of my discussion, specifically in my motivation, i gave a lot of clues
about the topic that we'll going to discuss. But nobody had the idea. One of my
tools to evaluate their schema about the topic is to raise a lot of questions
about it as my introduction. And before we end, just to make sure that they
already nourish everything that we discussed i asked them a questions again
that related to our topic. One way also to evaluate the learning's inside the
classroom is to have a short quiz after every discussion. It is a one way
or another also that your students will listen attentively and participate in
your class.
At
the end of the semester, Written Examination is the tool to measure their
intelligence and this is also the requirements to solve their grades.
6.
Curriculum
SMA Negeri 2 Padang uses the K-13 curriculum. The focus of this curriculum is to give emphasis on the inclusion of English as one of the school subject in Indonesia. But somehow, on my observation teachers there are not literate enough to communicate English. As a teacher, how could you produce a quality students if your lecturer are not good in his/her specific area.

|
Where are we going sir? Are we going out of space?
|
Definitely, we’re going to explore our childhood days. Are you excited?
|
Sounds interesting. Yeah we are excited.
|
Before we tackle the remaining composers, listen first to this music that is related to our topic as well to help us to reminisce our childhood memory. Are you ready?
|
Sir, we are always ready.
|
"Theme Song of Little Einstein"
|
LITTLE EINSTEIN!
|
Are you class familiar with this cartoon?

Yes sir, we always watched Little Einstein when I was a kid together with my younger brother and sister.

Nice to hear those classical music composed by Mozart sir! He is truly an amazing artist.

Remember class that not all composers succeed with their chosen field. And Mozart can be a proof with that.
|
What happened sir?
|
He mismanaged finances that’s the reason why he lived his life in poverty, he died young, and was buried in an unknown grave.
|
Halaaaa. How sad naman sir. That’s why that no matter how far you may go in your chosen race, always take to look in saving and spending money wisely. Am I right sir?
|
Yes langga, that’s right. And I believe that’s the personality of our next composer. Guess whoo?
|
Ludwig Van Beethoven

|
A little? Okay so let’s deepen our understanding and knowledge about Beethoven!
|
Yes sir, we are also willing to learn something new ideas about him.
|
Who can tell us something about Beethoven? Even a little idea will do.
|
Sir, as far as I know. Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany to a family of musicians and studied music at a very early age.
|
Yes, that’s true. Another information that you grade 9 will going to take note is that Beethoven is the composer who bridged the late classical era and the early romantic era. It means that? Anyone?
|
It means that, Beethoven is the one who experience classical era music and well developed it in early romantic period. He experienced both era and that was an edge for him.
|
We expect that a composer is good in what? In sports?
|
No sir! Not in sports. We expect that a composer just like Beethoven is a good pianist and composer.
|
Definitely, Beethoven is a good pianist and composer. Actually Beethoven had 32 piano sonatas, 21 set of variations, 9 symphonies, 5 concertos for piano, 16 string quartets, and choral music. And here’s an example of his works! Listen!

|
Who can summarize our topic that being discussed earlier? Anyone?
|
Sir, in the middle of the 18th century, Europe began to move toward a new style in architecture, literature, and the arts, known as classicism. It was also pushed forward by changes in the economic order and in social structure. Instrumental music was patronized by the nobility.
|
That’s right. Another? Yes please!
|
Music of the classical era is usually associated with the nobility. During that time most of the emmbers of the nobility would financially support the musicians. Music was played in the courts which make the music of the classical era more familiar to the nobility than the lower classes. This association of the rich and classical music is still being experienced in some parts of the world. However, with the dawn of radio and TV, classical music may now be experienced by the masses.
